There is a basic sentiment circulating the Occupy Wall Street protest that one percent of the population has done extraordinarily well while the other ninety nine percent has struggled. This may very well be the case, but what is the objective of the protest in this regard because it is not reasonable to think that the wealthy will suddenly show up and distribute their money among the crowd. It seems that the protesting efforts are misplaced and without focus. There is too much energy being expended over how the economic pie was divided and very little attention is being given to finding a way to change that dynamic. It is important to remember that the pie is not a permanently fixed amount, it can be continuously expanded. Focusing on the existing division is basically accepting that all ambition for the future is lost and economic growth is dead forever, therefore everybody should just fight for the remains of yesterday. This notion should be strongly rejected and America needs to get back to the business of creating, innovating, and producing value as a means of attaining prosperity. Through such efforts, capital will start flowing to these new pursuits thus automatically distributing wealth utilizing a more productive process. Value creation will generate new wealth to its creators thereby expanding the economic pie that increasingly makes the current division irrelevant. Spending time and energy protesting how the past has been distributed is a wasted effort that only impedes the imagination of how the future may be altered toward a more favorable outcome. The available wealth in our economy will grow to accommodate all value that is created thereby diluting any current wealth and those who possess it. It would be prudent to realize that stepping into the future while focusing on the past distribution does nothing but guarantee that same result going forward. Changing the future flow of wealth through value creation should be the goal not coveting the wealth of the past.

It boggles the mind to really think about what our Government has become on the most fundamental level. It has evolved into nothing more than a monetary distribution system that benefits some at the expense of others. It seems obvious to any logical thinking person that its function should be to collect revenue from all citizens earning income in order to provide for the common good of all citizens. Somewhere along the line it began to collect an increasing share of revenue from a decreasing segment of the population in order to provide benefits to its chosen groups. Basically, it takes from some to give to others. The Government is collecting an ever-increasing amount of money to compensate and expand itself first and foremost; then choosing how the remainder will be distributed, thus selecting the winners and losers in society by giving preference to one over another. There is so much talk about redistribution of wealth these days, but that has been going on for years. Any time that benefits are provided away from the actual taxpayers, it is a redistribution of wealth, which is tantamount to theft. This is accomplished through a diminishing taxpayer base that shoulders the burden of paying on behalf of all citizens as well as select groups being given preference by our Government. If taxes are not collected broadly to provide broadly, they simply should not be collected, otherwise redistribution results. That means no favors for any select grouping such as, homeowners and not renters, one state and not another, unions benefitting over nonunion, owners of old cars versus new, older people and not younger, or the poor over the rich etc etc. Subscribing to this modern day theft is to assume that our Government bureaucrats are better at allocating financial resources than we the people, and that being after they take their sizable and expanding share to boot.

The Government has ballooned in recent history simply to perpetuate and execute its objective of redistributing money between citizens while its function should be to provide for the common good of all by collecting from all and nothing more. Any policy that diverges from this sole purpose becomes divisive and creates an atmosphere of animosity and distrust from the ones being leaned on so heavily to pay the toll. Plus, there are always the unintended consequences of any Government action or intervention that usually plants the seeds for some future calamity that imposes its damage on society. Fortunately, the current course is not sustainable and it may not be too long before it all collapses back on itself as the payers become overwhelmed by the payees through the expansion of these redistribution efforts, thus becoming a burden for all once again. It will serve as yet another lesson to be ignored by a future ambitious politician vigorously buying votes of the many by promising the money of the few.

The pursuit of ideals such as social justice as a political objective completely discounts the contribution afforded by disparate results among members of society. It is through these contrasting outcomes of success or failure that serve to drive and inspire greater efforts in the future. If a citizen perceives their result as inferior to another, this becomes a motivating factor in their future pursuits. Being associated with the “have-not crowd” is not necessarily a permanent outcome; in fact, it should ardently focus one’s efforts to bring about a different and more desirable outcome going forward. Imagine a whole nation of individuals striving to better their own circumstances and the effect that has on the aggregate. No amount of guaranteed or promised results could begin to arouse the spirit unleashed by millions of people striving to exceed their own condition. This truth is evidenced by the greatness that the United States has attained through its history. It has resulted from the ambition created in our nation by allowing unequal results to be experienced thus pointing the way for others to follow and exceed if desired. Life is an everlasting competitive endeavor that will always result in winners and losers, but the good news is that it is an ongoing journey and there are many ways citizens can find to win as long as they remain engaged in the pursuit. This constant stirring of spirit for advancement is absolutely the only way to progress a nation to greatness thereby raising the livings standards of all its inhabitants.

It is hard to think of anything more cruel or self-defeating than to destroy the spirit and ambition within a population. Promising equal results to all will certainly result in a race to the bottom for everyone because all incentive will be eliminated thus ensuring failure. The ambitious crowd will cease to strive and take risk while the apathetic crowd will never be motivated to venture into realizing any aspiration. For as unkind as it seems that there are some in society that have attained a disproportionate amount of abundance, it is even more unkind to extinguish all hope that the others may ascend to the same level of accomplishment. Notions of social justice sound utopian, but as often true of Government promises; they seldom deliver and create massive destruction as a result of their implementation. Having different and unequal results in society should be viewed as a gift that facilitates a better life for all of us. Allowing a system that rewards effort and accomplishment will rightly keep America’s arrow pointed up in the future, anything to the contrary will guarantee an outcome not even worthy of a dismal participation trophy.

The concept of social justice has been around for quite a while now but it seems to have really gained momentum in our society recently. It has come to my attention so often lately that it has me thinking about what exactly is the objective of someone who touts this initiative. If you generally define the expression beginning with the word “social,” it refers to basic human co-existence or interaction among people. The word “justice” is commonly accepted to mean what is right, appropriate or deserved. This becomes realized when an unjust act is remedied and the victim is made whole again. It seems from a justice perspective that a person must be harmed by a specific person or entity, a careless action has been taken that directly impacts another and creates damages. This does not really fit the usage or the reality of the social justice message very well because there are avenues equally available to redress any such grievances that one commits on another. That leads me to consider the often cited ideal of equal opportunity as being the true objective of social justice in our nation, and the champions of this cause would probably agree that this is the central purpose of the agenda. However, this really does not hold up well either because there are too many examples of rags to riches stories from all walks of life from within our borders as well as immigrants from around the world that now make America their home. The availability of opportunity has been the primary distinguishing factor that has driven so many to our shores since our nation’s founding. There is no place on earth where one can realize their aspirations to a higher degree than right here in America and even the rest of the world would unlikely contest that thought. Numerous successes by immigrants who are naturally disadvantaged by language, customs and culture run contrary to any claims that opportunity is not available. Therefore, in the absence of specific wrongs being committed that require actual justice, and observing that opportunity apparently exists for those willing to actually pursue it, one is lead to conclude that neither is the real objective of social justice. The initiative likely has aspirations of a greater prize while still conveying the aforementioned motives as its aim.

The more plausible objective of the social justice movement is the unspoken goal of achieving income redistribution, a concept centered on equal result instead of equal opportunity. The concept of justice is asserted to portray the belief that some citizens among us rightfully deserve the same result as other more prosperous citizens and society has not delivered on that conviction, thus it is seen as an injustice that needs to be remedied. What makes this so attractive is that is requires no responsibility for one’s standing in life, it is too easy to play the victim proclaiming how unfair everything appears while expecting financial resolution under the pretext of justice. Equally disturbing to this thinking are the proponents of this mindset that actually believe this to be legitimate and expect one to compensate another only because they have attained wealth. The results are not perceived to be equal in our society, thus the remedy of reallocation is needed, and this can be accomplished while proclaiming it to be about equal opportunity. If it was really about equal opportunity and not equal result, then why is it not labeled social opportunity or something similar? A question that comes to mind is if all the money was equally redistributed tomorrow, would there still be a social justice movement in search of opportunity? If the answer is no, then ask yourself how long would it be before it resurfaces again. The answers are obvious and easily illustrate the true objective of social justice however malicious and absurd it may be.
